In defense of the divorce announcement

A few weeks ago, our family of five attended a work event of my ex-husband's. A splash pad was opening in honor of his late co-worker, Jessica Starr-Rose, and it made sense that we’d all be there- it was my custodial weekend with our kids, it was a family friendly event, and I knew Jessica. I was called his wife several times, and my ex’s visible discomfort grew, eventually leading to his audible disapproval. At one point a coworker came up to introduce herself to “Alan’s wife” and when he made a comment under his breath I said, “Alan wants me to let you know that we’re not married anymore.” She was confused and it was awkward for a moment, but I reassured her that we had small children, and we would not be getting away from one another anytime soon (ever) and that there is a good chance I would be seeing her again.
